Relic First Guardian Relic Combinations — Builds That Adapt to Every Brutal

Relic combinations for The Relic: First Guardian: the four combo archetypes, how to pair relics with weapon families, drawback management, and the swap discipline the game expects before every boss.

Relics are the passive fragment system that defines every build in The Relic: First Guardian — and the game's design is explicit about how they're meant to be used: "freely swap them to adapt your build to each boss." A static relic loadout is a misunderstanding of the game. This guide covers the confirmed relic effects, the four combo archetypes, weapon-family pairings, and the drawback math that turns a powerful set into a build decision.

1. What Relics Do (Confirmed Effects)

Official descriptions confirm five effect families:

Effect FamilyWhat It Does
Reshape skillsChange how an unlocked skill behaves
Alter combat tempoChange attack rhythm or stamina behavior
Buff specific weaponsAmplify a weapon family or playstyle
Improve survivabilityHealth, defense, sustain effects
Reduce cooldownsSkills run on cooldowns — fragments shorten them
The economy (confirmed): Relic Energy (from Brutals and Ancient Relic Blessings) buys skills in weapon skill trees; Shards of Awakening (found in exploration) unlock new relic slots via Elisa at any camp. Power = fragments equipped + fragments collected + skills bought — all combat/exploration driven, none XP driven.

2. The Four Combo Archetypes

ArchetypeCore IdeaConfirmed Relic Effects to CombineBest Against
Parry ChainMaximize parry uptime and stagger buildingStamina regen + parry-enhancing relics + skill reshapesParry-gate Brutals (see the Boss Strategies Guide)
Dodge FlowMobility and recovery for unblockable-heavy fightsCooldown reduction + movement/evasion effectsDodge-gate Brutals
Sustain WallOutlast every fightHealth, defense, sustain effectsMixed fights where chip damage accumulates
Cooldown EngineSkill spam as the damage coreCooldown reduction + skill-reshaping relicsAny fight where your weapon's skill is the win condition
Why archetypes beat item lists: with over 70 unique fragments and a roster of 70-80 Brutals, memorizing "the best relic" is useless — knowing which archetype a boss demands is the actual skill. Probe the fight (one early parry tells you the archetype), then match your combo.

3. Weapon-Family Pairings

Each weapon family has 2 skill trees (12 total) — the relic combo should amplify what the family wants to do:

Weapon FamilyPlaystyleRelic Effects That Amplify It
Two-HandedBig wind-ups, big windowsStamina economy + cooldown reduction
Dagger (dual blades)Pressure, multi-hitsWeapon damage buffs + tempo changes
Battle StaffDistance controlSkill reshapes + survivability
The pairing rule: fragments that buff your weapon family first, survivability second, and skill reshaping third — unless the fight demands otherwise (dodge-gate fights flip that order). See the Weapons Guide for the full family breakdown.

4. Drawback Math (The Build Decision)

Some of the strongest gear (unique artifacts) carry Drawbacks — a confirmed mechanic: losing stamina, gaining a weakness, or similar costs. Combined with relics, the math works like this:

SituationThe Decision
Drawback drains staminaNot for parry-chain fights — stamina is defense ammo (see the Combat Guide)
Drawback grants a weaknessMatch relics to cover it, or skip the item for that boss
Drawback fits the archetypeBuild around it — the game wants you to manage trade-offs, not ignore them
Powerful item, wrong bossSwap it out — official design is explicit that loadouts are per-fight
The rule: every strong piece is a build decision, not a pure upgrade. The Artifacts Guide documents the unique-gear rules (no duplicates, hand-placed, drawbacks) that make these choices permanent.

5. The Swap Discipline (Pre-Boss Routine)

  1. Identify the fight — probe: parry connects = parry-gate; parry fails = dodge-gate.
  2. Choose the archetype — Parry Chain, Dodge Flow, Sustain Wall, or Cooldown Engine.
  3. Match relics — weapon family buffs first, then the archetype's needs.
  4. Check the drawbacks — does any equipped gear fight your stamina plan?
  5. Swap at camp between fights — relic swapping is free and intended; never walk into a Brutal with last fight's set.
The mistake the game punishes: treating relics as a "build" you set once. The Builds Guide has full archetype loadouts, but every one of them expects adaptation — the game's hardest fights are tests of your swapping, not your collection.

6. Common Relic Mistakes

  1. Static builds. The #1 mistake — the game literally tells you to swap per boss.
  2. Ignoring cooldown reduction. Skills are your highest-damage tools; cooldown relics multiply the whole kit.
  3. Relic Energy hoarding. Relic Energy buys skill-tree nodes (including HP and Stamina nodes) — spending it is how you survive the late roster.
  4. Skipping Elisa. Shards of Awakening are worthless until you visit Elisa at a camp — unlock slots early and often.
  5. Gear over relics. Unique artifacts are powerful, but relics are the adaptable half of the build — and adaptability is the game's core demand.

7. The Full Build Loop

Find fragments and Shards through exploration → unlock slots at camp → earn Relic Energy from Brutals → buy skill nodes → assemble an archetype combo → probe the next Brutal → swap and adapt. The Upgrade System Guide covers the skill-tree side of this loop, the Tier List Guide ranks the weapon families (early impressions, unconfirmed data), and the Runes Guide has the deeper mechanics behind every fragment family.
