Artifacts & Unique Equipment — One-of-a-Kind Gear Explained

Artifacts and unique equipment in The Relic: First Guardian. Every weapon and armor piece is unique — no duplicate drops, item history, and Drawbacks. How the system works and what is unconfirmed.

v1.0Updated: 2026-08-11

One of The Relic: First Guardian's most distinctive systems is its equipment: every weapon and armor piece in the world is unique. There are no random loot drops and no duplicate items — each piece has its own history, its own story, and its own stats. Find a great weapon, and it is yours alone; lose it, and there is no second copy.

This guide covers the confirmed rules of the equipment system, the Drawbacks mechanic, and how it changes the way you build — with honest notes on what remains unconfirmed at launch (August 2026).

The Confirmed Rules of Unique Equipment

1. No Duplicates, Ever

Official material is explicit: every weapon and armor piece is unique, and there are no duplicate drops. This has big consequences:

  • Exploration is the loot system — items are hand-placed in the world (including hidden paths and secret areas), not rolled from a loot table.
  • No grinding for gear — you cannot farm a "better version" of a weapon; what you find is what exists.
  • Choice matters — with one copy of each item, choosing where to spend upgrade materials is a real decision (see the Upgrade System guide).

2. Every Item Has a Story

Each item is described as a unique artifact with its own history — official examples include a legendary knight's final blade and a shield embodying a family's vow. Reading item descriptions is part of the game's fragmented storytelling (letters, murals, item text).

3. Drawbacks: Powerful Items Cost Something

Some of the strongest items carry Drawbacks — confirmed official mechanic. Examples cited by official/preview material include losing stamina or gaining a weakness. Equipping a powerful artifact is therefore a build decision, not a pure upgrade: you may trade survivability for power.

How the System Shapes Builds

Gear Complements Relics

Your power comes from relics (passive fragments), skills (Relic Energy), and gear (unique equipment). Gear is the fixed part — since items are one-of-a-kind, builds are defined by which uniques you found and chose to equip.

Watch the Drawbacks

Before equipping a powerful piece, read its Drawback:

  • Does it lose stamina? That hurts the game's defense economy (stamina is for dodging/blocking only — see the Combat Guide).
  • Does it grant a weakness? It may make a specific boss fight miserable.
  • Trade-offs are the point — the game wants you to manage them, not ignore them.

Forge What You Love

Since you cannot find a second copy, the blacksmith is the only way to improve a favorite weapon. If an item carries a Drawback you cannot live with, that may be the moment to switch — but if the Drawback fits your playstyle, forge it up and build around it.

What Is NOT Confirmed

Specifics circulating online are largely unverified:

ClaimStatus
"Every weapon and armor piece is unique"Confirmed (official)
"Some items have Drawbacks"Confirmed (official)
"Items have histories/stories"Confirmed (official)
Named artifacts (e.g., "Tide Ward," "Aegis of the Fallen King," "Duelist's Charm")Unconfirmed — not in verified sources
Artifact categories with slot countsUnconfirmed
"Artifact slots start at 2, unlock up to 5"Unconfirmed
Rarity tiers with colors (Common/Exceptional/Legendary/Relic)Unconfirmed
Specific hidden artifact locationsUnconfirmed
Same rule as everywhere on this wiki: if a guide names an artifact, gives exact effects, and lists a precise location, treat it as speculative until verified in-game.

Practical Gear Advice (Confirmed-System-Based)

  1. Explore before you buy/fight — hand-placed uniques mean the world's hidden paths hold real power. See the Secret Areas guide.
  2. Read every item's story text — lore delivery and sometimes gameplay hints live in descriptions.
  3. Check Drawbacks before equipping — a "free" stat boost often comes with a hidden tax; decide consciously.
  4. Forge selectively — upgrade materials are spent on unique items that never re-drop, so commit to weapons you intend to use for a long time.
  5. Swap gear per boss like relics — with relics swappable and gear unique, adapting your equipment to the fight is part of the intended prep loop.

Common Questions

Q: Can I get duplicate weapons?

A: No — every weapon and armor piece in the world is unique; there are no duplicate drops.

Q: What are Drawbacks?

A: Negative effects on some powerful items — for example, losing stamina or gaining a weakness. They make strong gear a trade-off decision.

Q: How do I improve my gear?

A: At the blacksmith, using currencies and materials from the world. Exact upgrade costs are unconfirmed.

Q: Do artifacts have levels?

A: No — the game has no leveling system. Gear value comes from its unique stats, passives, and Drawbacks, plus blacksmith forging.

Q: Should I sell unwanted gear?

A: Unconfirmed — no verified economy info exists (selling, dismantling, or merchants). Until documented, hold on to uniques; they cannot be re-obtained.

Q: Are there armor sets?

A: Unconfirmed — the "set bonus" concept appears in speculative guides but has no verified source.
